Cesafinews | P657-M aims to enhance agricultural research in Leyte | TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Agriculture hopes to increase agricultural research in Leyte province with a budget of PHP657 million.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the DA regional office stated that House Speaker and Leyte 1st district Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez considers the proposed project to be a top priority.
“It will establish a competitive, technologically advanced, and dependable agricultural research network that will provide a critical support base for farming communities and the private sector to ensure the sustainable growth and development of the local agriculture sector,” the document states.
The proposal involves the modernization of the DA regional office’s existing agriculture research centers in the Leyte municipalities of Babatngon, Abuyog, and San Miguel. These experimental stations will concentrate on high-priority agricultural commodities, such as jackfruit and other fruit crops, livestock, poultry, rice, and maize.
Also proposed is the revival of the Regional Research and Development/Extension Network for Agriculture and Fisheries and the Eastern Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center, both of which were established years ago to develop an agricultural research program.
The regional office of the Department of Agriculture also seeks to revitalize provincial research and extension institutes in order to facilitate the adoption of agricultural technologies from the provincial to municipal levels.
“The concept is to conceptualize the technologies generated by national and regional research centers and to adopt site-specific technologies for application at the provincial and municipal level,” the DA explained.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized repeatedly that the government would increase agricultural production through research and technology.(via PNA)
